Mary Akpa embodies the divinity and sentiments of the African Diaspora with wonder and vulnerability. Born in Nigeria and raised in Southern California, Mary’s sound is thoroughly seasoned with her culture and experiences, yielding a soulful blend of highlife-inspired guitars, jazz and African influences. Her career spans over two decades and four continents, including time spent collaborating with numerous artists, and touring internationally. Mary’s 2021 single, “A Hurum Gi N’anya (I do)” is a soulful and introspective ode to self love that explores the essence of coming home to self. Coined as "a love letter to the African Diaspora" by AudioFemme and featured in Nylon’s February Soundcheck, the song delivers a message that many embrace. Deeply inspired by community and heritage, Mary’s identity is woven into her creativity and activism. In her commitment to social change, Mary co-founded Naija Girl Tribe: a non-profit supporting Nigerian girls through mentorship, personal development, and peer-focused counseling. Nnoo. Welcome and enjoy the journey.
