Biography

Composer Bjørn Bolstad Skjelbred (b.1970 - Norway) has a broad and varied musical background. He is active as a composer, arranger, improviser and teacher, with experience from several genres and musical environments. Skjelbreds list of works contains more than 90 titles, where music for other arts and music for young musicians are largely present. Skjelbreds music has been performed by The Oslo Philharmonic, The Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra and by a number of established and ensembles, like The Vertavo Quartet and Nordic Voices. Skjelbreds music has been performed in several European countries, USA and Canada in addition to the Nordic countries. Skjelbred is particularly interested in exploring the sound world of instruments in the broadest sense, and close collaborations with musicians, ensembles and artists are therefore very important to Skjelbred. Collaborations with Norwegian groups of actors like "The chosen Ones", "FaktaMorgana" and "Fabula Rasa" have resulted in several productions for the stage, which have been shown in several of the Scandinavian countries. Skjelbred finished his Diploma (Masters degree) in Composition at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in 2006, with composers Asbjørn Schaathun and Bjørn H. Kruse as his tutors. Skjelbred has served as vice president of the Norwegian Society of Composers between 2013 and 2016, and is now Administrative Director of Telemark Chamber Orchestra and leader of The Progression Ensemble Oslo.
