Known for her moving blend of groove and emotion, vocalist Sarah Thorpe is a French and British composer and arranger. Her musical world stands out for the sheer beauty of her tone and her superb choice of songs. Growing up near Paris and in Yorkshire, she obtained a MA in Philosophy, while training at the Bill Evans Piano Academy in Paris with Sara Lazarus and later Michele Hendricks. She played in many clubs in Paris and London, performing with splendid musicians such as Alain Jean-Marie, Jason Marsalis, Hugo Lippi, Darryl Hall, Ronald Baker, Olivier Hutman, former Randy Weston music director Talib Kibwe and Grammy-award winner Josiah Woodson. The freshness of her music brings together contemporary grooves and modern jazz standards, references to Roy Hargrove and Erykah Badu, Carmen Lundy and Abbey Lincoln. A gifted writer in her own right, she’s not afraid to tackle bare and emotional material or pick songs by Wayne Shorter or Bob Dylan to make them her own. After Never Leave Me (2015) and Deep Blue Love (2020), Take Your Flight (2024) displays a mature and moving aspect of her artistry. Acknowledged as an original voice, she has been described in these terms: “Sarah Thorpe’s vocal approach is to be as natural as possible (…) with authenticity, her focus is to make the melody meet the groove. She delivers songs with a universal reach, presenting impeccable musicianship and perfect command of purpose” (Jean-Michel Proust, Académie du Jazz president).
