Biography

David Ruiz was born in Puertollano (Spain), is an awarded Bassist, Composer, Arranger and Educator. He started playing electric bass, guitar and keyboard during his teens, influenced by multiple music genres like rock, flamenco and blues. At the age of 16 he started working as a touring musician. In 2005 he moved to San Sebastián to major electric bass at MUSIKENE, receiving several scholarships from the aid program for coal mining areas. In 2009 he received the first prize in the Young Artists Contest of Castilla La Mancha. During these years he was a finalist for the music contests at the Getxo Jazz Festival, Donostia-San Sebastián, Jazz sur l'herbe (France) and at Jazz a Castelló. He also received Masterclasses from great musicians such as Javier Colina, Doug Weiss, Carles Benavent, Peter Berstein, Michael Kanan and Jorge Rossy, among others. In 2011 he recorded the soundtrack for the film “Urte Berri On Amona”, which premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival. A year later he joined the trio of jazz pianist @Juan Ortiz, with @Borja Barrueta on drums. They recorded a live album named @Life is Too Short, which had a strong audience reception and was awarded as “Best Album of the Year” at the BBK Jazz Awards by famous Spanish Jazz Broadcaster @Juan Claudio Cifuentes “Cifu”. In 2014, after finishing his studies, he moved to Madrid, where he has been a very active live musician.
