Lavender Boy (finally) started getting their act together in 2020. Being a queer guy having been through tough relationship after tough relationship led to a need for closure. This is where music came in. Lavender Boy set themself up with a home studio in London, virtual stacks of unrecorded songs and decided to get pop done. Growing up on a musical diet of Rachel Stevens, Sigrid, Girls Aloud, Robyn and Carly Rae Jepsen, Lavender Boy wants to stick it to the 'synths aren't a real instrument' crowd and make smart pop music. The name 'Lavender Boy' derived from old slang: "I'd love to say the name is something smart. One day I was looking up lavender in the dictionary and saw 'lavender boy', an old term for a gay male. I'm all about reclamation. Plus it’s kind of a nod to Charli XCX’s ‘lavender Lamborghini’ in Vroom Vroom.” Their first single, Pseudosexual, was released on August 7th 2020. "It's about being a queer guy who's in love with a straight man. Ok, maybe not in love. But there's something there: intellect, flirtation, an unspoken heat. And you never really know what's going on inside his head. And if he accuses you of flirting, or fancying him... You know he's framed you like that in his head. It's pseudo-sexual. And you deny all of it... But does he believe the lie? That's the best lyric in that track. 'Do you believe the lie?'" Their first EP, ‘Automatic Heart’, was released on April 2.
