Biography

James Jones and Leland Royce form the song writing nucleus of the Waterbed Society. Their paths crossed on the set of an adult film shot on location in the Inland Empire in the early 90s. At the time, Leland was an aspiring cameraman languishing in the adult film industry hoping to work for MTV. Similarly, James Jones was also looking for his big break. Scoring adult films by day and writing sprawling compositions by night. James and Leland’s chance encounter occurred when James showed up to defend a rejected score deemed too passionate for a sex scene. After a fight with the producer, which resulted in his black balling in the industry, James stormed out. While starting his car he heard Leland singing in his inimitable falsetto while taking a smoke break and immediately approached the lanky singer. The two immediately hit it off, began making music and realized, after all night sessions at James’s studio, that they might be able to use their cinematic inclinations to make the perfect pop soundtrack to late night bedroom adventures. Thus The Waterbed Society was born.
