Biography

Joseph Callender connects his musical diaspora from humble beginnings in St. Michael, Barbados. By age of 12, he was touring with The Eggs Band directed by Cassius Clay. Joseph’s keen obsession with saxophone, connecting with other musicians and spreading the message of love through sound carries his music far.
Joseph studied music at Barbados Community College (BCC) and was introduced to jazz legend, the late Archie Alleyne. Archie awarded him a bursary at Naniki Jazz Festival in 2011. Once graduated from BCC, Joseph began touring for the next five years throughout the Caribbean, entertaining with the NJ3O band, 1688 Orchestra, Arturo Tappin, Marissa Lindsay, and others in the Caribbean music scene.
He has had the privilege to play with great acts like John Legend, India Irie, Lalah Hathaway and more.
In 2014, Archie told Joseph his career would fast forward. He helped Joseph apply to Humber College of Music, granting a second scholarship to cover international tuition fees. With an eagerness to grow his budding career, Joseph produced “On the Other Side” an event to raise funds for his journey to Canada. The show sold out to 500 people. He recalls the night as “magical,” performing alongside veteran pianist, Ebe Gilkes.
Newly graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Humber this year, Joseph feels the exhaustion leading up to graduation. Despite unprecedented times, it is music which keeps the fire blazing and spreading positive light to the world.
