Biography

Born Matthias Ernst in Weende, Germany on November 23, 1958, Max Goldt was a well-known underground musician, writer, satirist, and spoken word performer. His dual career life -- on the one hand a straight up rock musician in the late seventies/early eighties (and beyond, at least on a solo, exploratory level) and on the other a writer and contributor to magazines and newspapers both underground and mainstream, began when, just a year after moving to West Berlin, he formed the band Aroma Plus in 1978 with Gerd Pasemann. That band lasted for just a couple of albums, but the pair's next band, Foyer des Arts, signed with Warner, and released a hit single in 1982, "Wissensertes über Elangen," based on Goldt's time spent as a tourist guide. While the band would enter into a period of on and off hiatus until its official end in 1995, Goldt released a series of home recorded experimental instrumental and spoken work albums. In 1987, his job as journalist, writer, and satirist began in earnest as he was a regular contributor to underground publication Ich und mein Staubsauger. A year later, Goldt moved up to the leading satirical paper Titanic, and began to author the first of a series of essays that would mark the beginning of his career as spoken word performer. He released more than twenty music and spoken CDs, and has toured in many German speaking areas. He has also joined forces with comic artist Stephan Katz, and the two had their work printed in publications such as Titanic and Die Zeit, as well as in book form. In 2007, Goldt released the spoken album QQ -- Quiet Quality, and the comic book (with Stephan Katz) Der Globus ist unser Pony, der Kosmos unser richtiges Pferd. ~ Chris True, Rovi
