Sweet, sultry, poignant – all words that have been used to describe Jean Baylor's arresting voice. This Jersey girl has generations of musical influence that she has carefully crafted into her own distinct vocal stylings. Growing up singing everything from church hymns in her father’s church to R&B/Hip-Hop, it was natural that Jean chose to major in Jazz Vocal Performance while attending Temple University. Upon graduating, she made her mark as one-half of the platinum recording duo, Zhané, influencing a generation of music listeners into a new genre, Neo-Soul. Jean continued to develop her craft as a songwriter securing song placements for artists including Mary J. Blige and SWV as well as movie soundtracks, Disappearing Acts and Of Boys and Men. Teaming up with her husband, drummer and producer, Marcus Baylor, they formed The Baylor Project , an enticingly innovative approach to jazz which encompasses their combined influences of gospel, blues and soul, all while bridging the gap between generations. Their self-produced debut CD "The Journey", released on their own label, Be A Light, topped the Billboard Jazz Chart at Number 8 and a year later garnered 2 GRAMMY® Nominations for BEST JAZZ VOCAL ALBUM and BEST TRADITIONAL R&B PERFORMANCE, solidifying The Baylor Project as an undeniable force.
