Biography

David Dorůžka, born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1980, started performing on the Czech jazz scene as a 14-year old. After completing his studies at Berklee College of Music he recorded his debut album Hidden Paths in New York City with Kendrick Scott and Massimo Biolcati. Vincent Bessières described the album in French magazine Jazzman as “emanating an astonishing freshness and distilling a calm music…a lyricism delicately elegiac is expressed without haste or noise…a really beautiful discovery”. Dorůžka has received three Czech Anděl Awards for Jazz Albums of the Year for his own records (Hidden Paths, 2004; Silently Dawning, 2008; Autumn Tales, 2016). Dorůžka has appeared or recorded with the likes of Lizz Wright, Jeff Ballard, Kendrick Scott, Dan Tepfer, George Mraz, Jorge Rossy, Harish Raghavan, Chris Cheek, Arild Andersen, Django Bates, Hilmar Jensson, Bill McHenry, Jon Fält, Marcin Wasilewski, Rodney Green, Iva Bittová and many others. In 2022 Dorůžka released Andromeda’s Mystery with American drummer Jeff Ballard and Polish pianist/keyboardist Piotr Wylezol. Doug Collette wrote for allaboutjazz.com that “humility and magnanimity earmark the fifty-seven minutes of unusual ingenuity on Andromeda's Mystery.“ 2023 saw the release of Gilgul, a trio effort with flutist Robert Fischmann, drummer Martin Novák and several special guests. The album is an exploration of the legacy of Jewish music with its many facets that have evolved on various continents over the centuries.
