Dragon's Eye Recordings welcomes Braulio Lam back with his second solo album for the imprint, Claroscuro, an ode to the observation of natural light and its effects on our emotions. Across eight tracks, Lam strips away the field recordings, vocals, glitches, and textures of his previous works to create monolithic minimalist drones that evoke the painterly hues and contrasting shadows of the golden hour in October. In the wake of the pandemic, Lam has became obsessed with the poetics of light. His obsession began when he noticed how the daylight reflected throughout his domestic space. Along with that light came the strong shadows that it created, and he became interested in recreating the chiaroscuro technique with sound. The result is a more stripped-down and minimalistic sound than we have heard from Lam—a deliberate move to embrace simplicity and elegance, echoing the sentiments of cinematographer Gordon Willis: “Simple is very elegant. I like taking away, not add things. I don’t like complexity”.
