Mikel Unzurrunzaga Schmitz, aka Makala and/or DJ Makala, is based in the Basque Country, region of Spain. With more than two decades working as Club and Radio DJ, is also a versatile musician, producer, remixer and promoter. Having released records and vinyls on labels such as Novophonic, Lovemonk & Elkar, also own songs and remixes in compilations for UrbanWorld, Movimientos London, Agogo, Freshly Squeezed, Wagram, Rebel Up,... Makala’s “Unexpected Tapas (Happy Sound) album was finalist of “Best World Music Album” of Spanish Independent Music Awards MIN 2012. Since the mid 90s, has been performing live as DJ or musician across European venues, clubs & festivals such as Womex (Finland), Glastonbury (UK), Wilderness (UK), Couvre Feu (France), Dranouter (Belgium), Popkomm (Germany), Sonar (Barcelona), Jazzaldia (Donostia-San Sebastián),… Since 2005, manages his weekly Boom Shaka Laka radio show on Radio Gaztea, Basque Public Radio (EITB). Since 2008, organizes the Global Funk events in the Basque cities, having shared & played with guest DJs & artists like Alice Russell & TM Juke, Nickodemus, Quantic, Daniel Haaksman, Rainer Trüby, Captain Planet, Tahira, Txarly Brown,...
