Biography

b. 1956, England. Helen Terry first came to prominence as the backing singer in Culture Club’s 1983 heyday. She travelled widely with the group before they collapsed amid financial and drug excesses. Later Terry reacted angrily to the suggestion in Boy George’s autobiography that it was she who had introduced him to drugs. Her solo career started shortly after the break-up of the band, on Culture Club’s label, Virgin Records. However, Blue Note did not sell well, and she then moved to EMI Records for two singles, ‘Fortunate Fool’ and ‘Lessons In Loneliness’. However, when her new label attempted to push a projected second album in a more dance-orientated direction, Terry left the music industry, opting instead for a career in television as she had previously worked in animation. After initial employment as a researcher she became assistant director to Channel 4’s Friday At The Dome before taking up freelance work. Although her musical engagements were limited to a guest appearance on Holly Johnson’s ‘Legendary Children’ single and sessions with Kevin Mooney (ex-Adam And The Ants), she also directed a documentary on the Pretenders and worked on various television music charity projects, especially those geared towards AIDS awareness.
