l'Héritier: Ave Domina mea

Josquin's Legacy: Motets of the 15th &...

Biography

Lheritier was a student of Josquin and worked in Ferrara, Rome and perhaps even Florence where it is thoght that he had connections. Many of his compositions survive in numerous manuscripts starting in Italy but not limited to that geographical scope. The manuscripts also extend to France, Spain, Holland, Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia. His primary genre was the motet though one chanson survives "Jan, petit Jan". Characteristics of his motets include consistent imitation offset by homophony for textual and structural reasons, arches that are evenly handled in the melodic line, step-wise intervals (for the most part), syllabic declamation of the text, modal regularity, and consistent counterpoint. In history Lheritier will be remembered for his influence on the development of fresh stylistic forms. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
