Biography

The brother of trumpet player Ian Carr, Mike Carr taught himself the organ, piano, and vibes, and gained a reputation in the Newcastle-based EmCee Five. By the late '60s, he was leading a trio that included John McLaughlin and accompanied distinguished visiting musicians. He toured with Ronnie Scott's group between 1971 and 1975, appearing with them at Carnegie Hall in 1974. His own quartet then toured Europe, and he formed Cargo, a jazz-rock group that debuted with an eponymous album in 1982. Carr continued to appear around the U.K., leading bands with varying lineups and playing a hard-swinging, dynamic music rooted in jazz and blues. His later recordings included For Export Only by Cargo (1990; re-released as Do It! in 1997), Good Times & the Blues (1993), and Stevenson's Rocket (2002). Mike Carr died in September 2017 at the age of 79. ~ TiVo Staff, Rovi
