Biography

Guess What are a French duo whose shapeshifting, cinematic sound evokes numerous eras of film soundtracks as well as exotica, bossa nova, funk, psychedelic rock, and many other genres. Percussonist Luke Warmcop and multi-instrumentalist Graham Mushnik formed the duo in 2005 as a studio project, producing soundtracks to imaginary films. They made their live debut in 2008 when they began performing music dedicated to Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin. The group's debut full-length, simply titled Yuri Gagarin, arrived on French label Catapulte Records in late 2009, featuring suave organ-driven instrumentals embellished with intriguing instruments such as zither and accordion. The duo then turned its focus toward vintage Italian film soundtracks, finding inspiration in the more loungey side of works by soundtrack composers such as Ennio Morricone and Riz Ortolani. Mondo Giallo: The Best of the Giallo Soundtracks 1968-1974, an album of the group's originals disguised as tracks from vintage Italian films, appeared on Imagenes in 2012. Following this release, Guess What shifted direction yet again after becoming enamored with Persian mathematician and astronomer Al-Khawarizmi. The duo's 2015 album, Al-Khawarizmi, released once again by Catapulte Records, was a dubby, trippy excursion inspired by Middle Eastern music. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
