Biography

Pietro De Maria is an Italian pianist. Raised in Venice, De Maria was a piano student of Giorgio Vianello and Gino Gorini. At the age of 13, he won first prize at the Alfred Cortot International Piano Competition in Milan. He attended the Conservatory of Venice, and in 1988, as a student of Maria Tipo at the Conservatory of Geneva, he received the Premier Prix de Virtuosité with highest honors. Winner of the Critics' Prize at the 1990 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, De Maria went on to win other international competitions, including the Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Pianisti "Dino Ciani" at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Concours Géza Anda in Zurich, and the Mendelssohn Award in Hamburg. De Maria's repertoire ranges from the Baroque period to the modern, and he has recorded the works of Frédéric Chopin for Decca. In 2010, to celebrate Chopin's bicentennial, De Maria performed his works in Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Zurich, Rome, Beijing, and Singapore, as well as making a special appearance at the Nohant Chopin Festival in France. He has recorded for Naxos, Brilliant Classics, VAI Audio, and Decca.
