Biography

An English Renaissance composer of some repute. It is probable that Bedyngham resided in England throughout his life and in position at St. Stephens, Westminster. He composed masses, motets, ballades and rondeaux. The works were widely disseminated as can be discerned via the many tranlations into Latin, French, and Italian. "Durer ne puis" and "Mon seul plaisir" are most likely Bedyngham's as are "O rosa bella," "Gentil Madonna," and "So ys emprentid." The texts are often borrowed from foreign sources resulting in music that does not properly coincide with the structure of the poetry. This is an indication that the French and Italian texts were put to music by someone who did not comprehnd the syntax and subtleties of the languages (i.e. an Englishman). Regardless, the number of compositions -- even those of questionable origin -- render Johannes a prolific composer. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
