Biography

Juliusz Zarebski (last name is pronounced "Zarembski"), who died young from tuberculosis, drew much attention as a successful performer and composer; quite notably, he mastered the playing of the two-keyboard piano. Initially a child prodigy who began to give concerts at the age of nine, he studied piano with J. Dachs and composition with Fritz Krenn at the Vienna Conservatory, graduating with gold medals in 1872. The following year, he studied with Liszt in Rome and quickly became one of his favorite scholars. Building upon their academic relationship, they worked side-by-side as professionals giving four-hand piano concerts. It is difficult to imagine how he would have avoided Liszt's influence as a composer. together. Zarebski's best known work is his Piano Quintet, Op. 34, as one of the seminal works of late nineteenth-century Polish music. His other compositions include short piano works, most of which had their premieres in either Berlin, Leipzig, or Mainz. Fortunately, toward the end of his life, Zarebski performed in many European cities. Several of his compositions have since been recorded for Olympia, Pavane, and Dorian.
