The Chronicles of Philander Brown & Ne...

Biography

Brothers Malik Rice (aka Malik Nice) and Erik Rice (aka Brody Ave.) emerged onto the nascent Tucson hip hop scene in the early '90s as Imminent Domayn. Quickly gaining attention, they opened for Big Daddy Kane, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Ice T. and Public Enemy before morphing into Aquafyde Boogey Bros. in 1997. They appeared on Tucson's first city-wide underground hip hop compilation—Uncharted Grounds: The Union (Reek of Indo Records), mega rare—and followed with Listen Up World, their full-length debut. Their sophomore release, The Chronicles of Philander Brown & Nebula Black (E.E.E./SouthFresh Records), has dropped. Here is a taste.
Smashing together dope beats with sentient lyrics, The Chronicles of Philander Brown & Nebula Black is a mashup drawing from identifiable points on the hip hop timeline: Outkast and Hieroglyphics Crew to Public Enemy and Grandmaster Flash. Yet, the album is imbued with a distinctive tang. Brody Ave. reflects, "Growing up here had a different personality." With a discerning eye, Aquafyde Boogey Bros. rap about life as they've experienced it.
