Biography

Sovali is the stage name of Amsterdam based singer Sofie van Lier. She comes from an artistic family and learned to love art and music from an early age. Gifted with an innate curiosity, she not only thoroughly studied the standard classical repertoire, but also delved into lesser-known repertoire and explored different musical styles. She obtained a master's degree in musicology from the University of Amsterdam and studied classical singing with Gerhard Meijer, Jon Frederic West and Eleanor Steber, but also took Indian raga singing lessons with Uday Bhawalkar and lessons with Ornette Coleman. She recorded songs by the neglected Anglo-Dutch composer Bernard van Dieren, which were released on LP by BVHaast (soon to be re-released on the web). And she devoted herself to the revival of the forgotten music of composers of the Jewish Folk Music Society founded in 1908 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
