The Grizzly Folk started as a duo, playing British sea shanties to confused audiences in the south of Japan. Occasionally we'd write our own stuff, and eventually that avenue led us to the albums Gurning at the Moon and Lairy Through the Town as well as the Baibaba Bimba EP. In 2019, we released a set of old recordings called Leftovers and a standalone single – a cover of October Song by the Incredible String Band. Jon Wilks, the singer and guitarist in the band, also appears on Spotify as a solo artist playing traditional folk songs. Jon Nice, who plays all keyboards and many of the loops, also plays with Butcher's Dog. In the past, band members have included Dai Evans of Nanbanjin (Jon Wilks produced their first album), Richard Lines, Em Kuntze and Dave Borgeson of Cut Flowers. In 2020, during the pandemic lockdown, Jon Nice joined forces with Jon Wilks, Katherine Priddy and Lukas Drinkwater to form the covers band, Slow Jane. On November 11th, 2020, the duo released a new EP that they'd been tinkering with for the best part of 18 months. Tape Machine featured three new, original songs (including a rewrite of the traditional song, Spencer the Rover) and a cover of a song by Cate Le Bon.
