Biography

Hailing from the South and now based in Leeds, Dan Franks and Charlie Kirkland make up upcoming House and Techno duo 'Understate'. Starting out in 2014 the pair released their debut track 'Let It Go' featuring emerging UK-based singer/songwriter Gaby Henshaw. Quickly picking up label interest the track was snapped up and signed to one of the biggest dance music labels in the world; Armada Music’s imprint Armada Deep. Since then they have gone onto to release music for some of the most credible labels such as Cr2, Cutting Wax, 808 Records, and Polydor. Their music has been supported by Pete Tong, Riva Starr, Monki, Sonny Fodera, Hannah Wants, Don Diablo, Paco Osuna, Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Steve Lawler, Roger Sanchez, Shiba San, Wade, Reelow, PAX, Jack Swaffer & Richey Profond and BBC Radio 1. Having created a buzz in the electronic music scene over the past few years, the duo have gained support from BBC Radio 1 and BBC Introducing after they were handpicked by DJ Monki to support her on her 'Monki & Friends’ tour, this lead them to play the opening slot for the Radio 1's Big Weekend in Ibiza. They then went on to win the Liverpool date for the Hannah Wants play tour in 2018. They also now hold residencies at Hideout Festival in Croatia and Canal Mills in Leeds UK. Their bass-heavy tracks and energetic live sets merging house, techno and bass music make Understate one of the most hotly tipped DJ duos to look out for right now.
