Biography

3 June 1972, Indonesia. Yuni Shara achieved a major domestic breakthrough in 1995 with the release of two highly commercial pop collections. The first of these was Mengapa Tiada Maaf (Why Don’t You Apologise To Me?), which sold more than 150, 000 copies and established her as a rising star on the continent. The vast majority of the record comprised, as is typical for the region, remixes of Indonesian pop ballads. In July of the same year she followed this with the release of Return Of The Condor Hero. This was marketed in tandem with a major Cantonese kung-fu movie of the same title starring Andy Lau. Within six weeks it had sold over half a million copies. Her third album of 1995 was October’s Sebelum kau pergi (Before You Go). Again, this proved a steady-seller, though it did not enjoy quite the commercial profile that its predecessor had.
