Agua Negra is what happens when two oceans meet. Hip-hop drenched in bolero, cumbia, Latin soul and funk, the reflection of the pair's rich ancestral heritage coming together to form a modern, multicultural urban experience. Lately, they performed in some of the most prestigious festivals, such as the Montreal International Jazz Fest and Les Francofolies plus touring in Mexico and Chile, finding an audience clamouring for Agua Negra's signature sound. Agua Negra is a duo comprised of Chilean rapper/producer Cotola (Obia le Chef, Santa Magdalena, Maverick Montana) and Hondureño-Colombian singer/rapper Paranoize (Souldia, Planet Asia, Koriass). Their sound is the product of warm, melancholic melodies over raw, heavy productions, synthesizing samples as well as live instrumentation from musicians in Montreal’s fertile jazz and soul music scene, emphasizing a moodier approach to live hip-hop. An ode to the boleros of yore and rap music the way inner-city latinos remember it, as well as a glimpse into the future, fusing two vastly different legacies into a singular vision. Through their work, Agua Negra have helped to push Montreal’s unique trilingual Latin hip-hop movement forward all while maintaining a strong connection to the roots of hip-hop as a voice for justice and street knowledge.
