888. Guyanese artist Shaquille Glasgow who goes by the stage name “Gavrie” seeks to bring light to everyday people in his music. He hails from a small village in Mahaicony called Harmony Hall commonly known as “Highdam”. Gavrie started writing raps in his 3rd form classroom after falling in love with Hip Hop. If it wasn't for being a student at President’s College his love for the artform would not have existed since it was a popular genre amongst his peers there. His musical influences that inspired him to write his own music were 50 Cent, Eminem and Lil Wayne. 50 Cent and Eminem made him love Hip Hop but it was Lil Wayne’s top tier lyricism that sparked Gavrie to write his first raps. All throughout high school Gavrie would continue to work on his writing ability especially in 4th & 5th forms. A few years later he got to perform for the first time with a friend at a Hip Hop & Poetry Talent show. He was very nervous but nevertheless the crowd enjoyed the performance by him and his friends. His style fuses hip hop with Guyanese creole and Guyanese folk music and Jamaican Dance hall music termed as Kweh Kweh. Gavrie would describe his music as “unique and real” because he aims to inspire people with his own life experiences whether good or bad. He wants people to be able to relate to his music and not give up.
