Biography

Having studied with Agazzari, Massenzio became the master of the chapel in the Roman Seminary succeeding his other teacher, Anerio. He served as a canon of Ronciglione Cathedral and Santa Maria in Via Lata Rome. As the director for the second choir of the Cappella Giulia, Massenzio conducted a choir that was composed entirely of instruments. A prolific composer of sacred music, Massenzio set five volumes of motets and eight volumes of psalms. Most of these were composed in the decade of the 1630s. Early motets were arranged in the concertato style with shapely melodic lines. Later motets, later by only four years, were predominantly contrapuntal. Contrasting duets were contained in many of his compositions. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
