Biography

Halfway was formed in 2000 by John Busby, Elwin Hawtin, Ben Johnson and Chris Dale in Windsor, Brisbane. Dublin-born brothers Noel Fitzpatrick and Liam Fitzpatrick joined in 2002 and the lineup was rounded out when John Willsteed and Luke Peacock joined in 2010. The band have released eight studio albums, all of which have received numerous awards and accolades. Over time, they have developed their own unique style of Australian storytelling, combining indie rock, folk and country music. The band's career has been built around heavily themed albums, the two most recent being ‘On the Ghostline, with Hands of Lightning’ (Aug 2022) and ‘Restless Dream’ (Sept 2021), both released through ABC Music and Plus One Records. ‘On the Ghostline, with Hands of Lightning’ is an album about repurposed and imagined memories and how we use them to get through the daily grind. Tony Moore wrote in the The Sydney Morning Herald: "Ghost nets floating lost at sea are the core image as the band trap the power of memories and sing of Australian dreams and triumphs”. ‘Restless Dream’ is a collaboration with Indigenous Elder Bobby Weatherall. It is based on his 30 years of work in repatriating indigenous remains and artefacts from around the world. Both albums have received widespread critical acclaim. ‘Restless Dream’ was nominated at the 2021 ARIA Awards for ‘Best World Music Album’.
