Mec Yek, a trailblazing gypsy band, shines under the charismatic lead of vocalists Katia and Milka Pohlodkova. Sisters from the Roma community, originally hailing from Košice, Slovakia, and now settled in Belgium since their teens, Katia and Milka made an unforgettable debut by joining Mec Yek on stage during an encore. Their mesmerizing vocals and captivating presence have since become integral to the band's identity. Led by Piet Maris, also known for his role in Jaune Toujours, Mec Yek delves into the rich musical traditions of the Roma people. Piet Maris conducted extensive fieldwork among the Roma communities in Slovakia, immersing himself in their vibrant musical culture. His experiences deeply influenced Mec Yek's approach, blending traditional Roma styles with urban dub, ska, Latin, and soul influences. Mec Yek is proudly associated with the label of the Choux de Bruxelles - Artist Collective, alongside bands like Jaune Toujours, 3'Ain, Otto Kintet, and Viggo Maris. Their affiliation highlights their commitment to artistic collaboration and cultural diversity within the collective. The band has graced renowned stages, including a memorable performance at Womad in 2009, and has released three studio albums: 'Antikrisis,' 'Superdivercity,' and their latest opus, 'Taisa,' each showcasing their evolution and musical diversity.
