Biography

Inspired by the buddhist mythology of Sun Wukong, GOkU tells this story through dark grooves and global rhythms, jazz sometimes in its free-ist form and sometimes to tell a clear story. Whether self produced or recorded with a live band GOkU's music is varied and nourishing. A prominent part of Glasgow's emerging jazz scene, GOkU learnt music through organic processes... from thousands of hours of improvised jamming with his first band Amara, or under the tutelage of Ghanaian balafon master Chief Chebe as the guitarist for GABO (Glasgow African Balafon Orchestra), or having significant roles in the creative process of other projects such as Josef Akin - GOkU's compositions are born of unique life experiences and seemingly random encounters - the blind Navajo wonderer in New Mexico who taught him traditional flute and told him 'breath will be your guide'; lessons from samba percussion masters in Brazil encountered in the streets; or accidentally stumbling into an ayahuasca ceremony in Portugal, his influences are as varied as his music. '...Deepest levels, everything is ultimately love and light and a cheeky and slightly cynical twist on this perspective is what GOkU is all about... to open the spirit and the mind with good vibes, a bit of humour, strong rhythm, and the originality that comes from my own personal story.'
