A Song for Francesca: Music in Italy, ...

Biography

The compositions of Hugo de Lantins appear in the same manuscripts as those of Arnold de Lantins. A number of Hugo's works contain dedications such as the praising of Doge Francesco Foscari in the motet "Christus vincit," and the ballata "Tra quante regione" in which he praised Sparta, the Eastern Roman Empire nd the bride of the Prince of Sparta. These dedictions indicate Hugo's activity in Italy as well. The dedication in his rondeau "Mirar non posso," and the dedicatory similarities of Dufay indicate a close relationship betwen the two composers. The Gloria-Credo pair of Hugo de Lantins contains identical openings in all three of the voices and the pattern found in the tenor is often repeated in both members of the pair. Hugo's works can be distinguished from the works of Arnold because Hugo's compositions comparatively include a great deal of imitation and a Gloria with a canon in the two upper voices. Neither of these attributes are found in the compositions of Arnold. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
