Born in Tehran, Iran, Gity Razaz is a composer of classical concert and electroacoustic music who currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. Her music possess both a deep, dramatic lyricism and an otherworldly fascination with mysticism, surrealist poetry, and ancient folklore. Her recent commissions include a piece for acclaimed cellist Alisa Weilerstein and her multi-year project “Fragments,” a 2021 commission from BBC Symphony Orchestra for the Last Night of the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and a commission by the League of American Orchestras for San Diego Symphony and conductor Rafael Payare. Other commissions have included a full-length ballet for Ballet Moscow, which receives regular performances ever since its world premiere in Moscow in June of 2017. She was the composer-in-residence for the inaugural season of Brooklyn’s ground-breaking National Sawdust and Chautauqua Opera Company in 2017. Her first short opera was commissioned by Washington National Opera and premiered at the Kennedy Center. Her music for cello and electronics was included in the opening of Seattle Symphony’s Octave 9 in March 2019. Her debut album, "The Strange Highway," on BIS Records came out this August, and features the cello octet The Strange Highway, Legend of Sigh for cellist Inbal Segev, Metamorphosis of Narcissus with Metropolis Ensemble, Duo featuring violinist Francesca dePasquale, and Spellbound, commissioned by Maggie Snyder and performed by Katharina Kang Litton.
