Biography

Edvard Schiffauer (b. 1942, Ostrava, Czech Republic) is a Czech composer whose body of work includes operas, masses, oratorios, chamber music, and theatre compositions. His career was marked by challenges during the communist era, including imprisonment for his involvement in satirical theatre. Despite these difficulties, he remained devoted to his craft and developed a unique voice in Czech classical music. His compositions reflect themes of resilience, heritage, and emotion, blending traditional influences with his own style. After the Velvet Revolution, Schiffauer completed his studies and shared his knowledge as a teacher at the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava and the Silesian University in Opava. There is now a gradual effort to bring Schiffauer’s works to a wider audience, honoring his contribution to Czech music.
