Biography

"Il principiante di musica" was one of two theoretical works by Gregori. This was an elementary text book that saw five editions. His second theoretical work was entitled "Il canto fermo in practica." As a violinist and composer the first noted position for Gregori was as a violinist in the palatine chapel of Lucca. He was then twenty five years of age. Gregori maintained this occupation until 1742; he died three years later. The most successful works by Gregori, compositions in which his talent can be discerned, were vocal chamber pieces in which he employed the form of French dances to compose airs. All contain two brief melodies that are repeated, and the dances, half of them (18 out of 37), were grouped together. The various settings included soprana and continuo, alto and continuo, and duets. Gregori's concerti grossi are often referred to as the compositions in which the term `grossi' first appears. In this situation, Gregori meant to convey the idea that the violins could be doubled where the cue was indicated. The specific and separatley printed `ripieno' section in his fourth concerto grosso was innovative in that it brought forth the potential for a more complex relationship between the tutti players and the soloists. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
