Biography

As Rising Sun, German producer and label curator Steffen Laschinski makes lush, reflective dance music ranging from ambient and deep house to breakbeat-driven techno. He's steadily racked up a sizeable discography of limited vinyl releases, mainly on his own imprints, which include Kristofferson Kristofferson, Reality Used to Be a Friend of Mine, and distributor Styrax Electronica. His inspirational 2011 single "Lift Up Your Faces" became an Ibiza favorite, and he received acclaim for his eclectic, sprawling albums like 2016's The Lamentations of Rising Sun, which explore styles ranging from ambient to drum'n'bass. He ventured into dub techno with 2024's The Eternal. Rising Sun first appeared on a 2008 12" EP released by Workshop, the label run by minimal techno producer Lowtec. Deep house record Sun Dance was issued by Real Soon in 2009, then the project made the first of many appearances on Fauxpas Musik with 2011's Lift Up Your Faces. Its title cut became an underground hit, and was regularly played as a closing track at Amnesia Ibiza. Laschinski founded the label Kristofferson Kristofferson and released several singles in 2012, with Heart & Soul - Strings & Nostalgia, a full-length CD-R mainly consisting of remixes and previously unreleased tracks, appearing in 2013. Several more singles and EPs were issued, often on self-created labels, before full-length debut The Lamentations of Rising Sun and the Trilogy EP series arrived on Fauxpas in 2016. Laschinski began incorporating more breakbeats into releases such as 2017's "Lament" and 2018's Realism EPs. While generally preferring to release music on vinyl EPs, Rising Sun issued the digital album Lost Memories Volume 1, including remastered versions of several in-demand tracks, in 2020. Subsequent digital full-lengths Stoicism (2021) and Liquid World (2022) focused on exclusive material. The Eternal appeared on dub techno label Echocord in 2024. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
