Biography

Boundary-breaking duo God-Des & She are one of the few openly gay hip-hop artists to make any impact in the mainstream, thanks to their blend of hard-hitting themes, Eminem-influenced lyrical delivery, and melodic soul-pop hooks. Rapper God-Des, the daughter of a trombone professor father who played on The Flintstones theme, and a cellist mother who performed with Carole King, and vocalist She, a former punk band drummer previously known as Tina G, first got together in Madison, WI in 1999. After constantly touring the U.S. they moved to New York in 2004, where they both took on various jobs in order to fund their music, and in the same year, they appeared in the LGBT channel Logo documentary Hip-Hop Homos, opened for MC Lyte and Slick Rick, and released their debut album, Reality. After playing at a party for Showtown's lesbian drama, The L Word, they were invited by producers to perform their provocative track, "Lick It," on the Series 3 finale's wedding scene. Following 2008's sophomore Stand Up, the pair toured the world, and teamed up with Public Enemy bassist Brian Hardgroove, who produced their critically acclaimed 2009 effort, Three. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
