Biography

Jean-Luc "Lulu" Mascolo is a French-American musician whose story began in New Orleans, born in 1910 to a French mother and an Italian-American father, Mascolo was influenced by the jazz and blues of his hometown, as well as the rich musical traditions of France, which he visited frequently. By the early 1930s, he had made a name for himself as a promising multi-instrumentalist and composer, with a style that blended American swing with European classical and folk elements. However, in 1936, at the peak of his rising recognition, Mascolo disappeared under mysterious circumstances while traveling through France. Rumors swirled that he had been disappeared by Le Milieu, the infamous French mafia, but no trace of him was ever found. For decades, he was presumed dead, his fate a mystery. In a shocking turn of events, Mascolo resurfaced in 2016—alive and well—spotted by an associate from the record label Yes Yes Yes at a café in the quaint town of La Châtre, France. He was living quietly, seemingly unaffected by the decades that had passed. In his time away, Mascolo had amassed a collection of strange songs, composed in isolation and influenced by Air, Ed Banger, Mazzy Star, Jamie XX, Caribou, Bon Iver, Sébastien Tellier, forgotten folk traditions, and the passage of time itself. Over a cigarette and a glass of wine, Yes Yes Yes sketched out an opportunity for the musician to release these long-lost works starting in the summer of 2024 and slated for release over the next years.
