Joanna Marsden is a ‘fabulous’ (the Whole Note) flautist based in Montréal, Québec. She has performed recently in North America and Europe “beautifully” (Luis Gago, Madrid) and “with notable rhetorical clarity” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). She has worked with conductors including Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Florian Heyerick, Václav Luks, Mathieu Lussier, Julian Prégardien, and Peter van Heyghen among others. Her début CD, Devienne Sonatas with Mark Edwards, was issued by Centaur Records. Her album Michel de la Barre’s Premier Livre (Navona Records) with Christophe Gauthier, Margaret Little, and Daniel Zuluaga was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. 2023, her album Michel Pignolet de Montéclair’s Concerts will be released by Navona Records on June 23, 2023. She appears on Rezonance Baroque’s album of chamber music by Scottish baroque composer James Oswald (2023) and will soon appear on Arion’s album of music by Henri-Joseph Rigel. Her main teachers include Wilbert Hazelzet (Royal Conservatory of the Hague), Claire Guimond (Schulich School of Music of McGill University), and John Solum (Vassar College). She addresses a wide repertoire, playing antique flutes by Tortochot (Paris, ~1770), Claire Godfroy l’aîné (Paris, ~1820), Jean-Louis Tulou (Paris, ~1841) and Isidore Lot (Paris ~1870), and a first-generation flute made by Louis Esprit Lot (1868).
