Biography

A multi-genre mainstay of the Los Angeles music scene, Paul Bryan is a Grammy-winning producer, bassist, and composer/arranger. Recent among his many album productions are: Jeff Parker’s The New Breed, Suite For Max Brown (International Anthem), Aimee Mann’s Mental Illness, ’her quintessential statement’ (Pitchfork) and Jeremy Cunningham's The Weather Up There (Northern Spy). He has recorded and toured with a diverse range of artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint, Ann Peebles, Rufus Wainwright, and Lucinda Williams. Bryan’s ‘uncommonly effective’ string arrangements (New Yorker) and ‘unexpected deftness with subtle orchestration’ (Variety) have been featured on many records with standouts such as Nina Nastasia’s Outlaster (Fat Cat), Grant Lee Phillips Little Moon (Yep Rock), and Amy Correia’s indie release You Go Your Way. Cri$el Gems is a groove-heavy session rich in sonic texture that marries the Los Angeles Beat Music scene with Bryan’s range-y compositions. Structural elements bob and weave around group improvisation creating a seamless balance. West coast soul with a compositional eye on strategy. “Paul Bryan is a star in the LA night sky. My heart goes out to any bass player who has to play with me but Paul knows what is what...” -Meshell Ndegeocello “Paul brings a dogged determination and dedication to making everything as musical and gorgeous as possible...an extremely rare combination.” -Aimee Mann
