Luther, The Noble Art of Music

Biography

The Belgian Utopia Ensemble unites five singers who have enjoyed years of experience with internationally renowned ensembles. In the early years Utopia ensemble has released two CDs on the Et'cetera label. The recording of “The seven Lamentations" by Cristóbal de Morales received a lot of praise and the collaboration with wind instrument ensemble InAlto, “Luther, the noble Art of Music”, was also well received. Since 2021, Utopia Ensemble has collaborated with the early music label Ramée (Outhere Music). Their CD “The musical universe of Andreas Pevernage” features the current line-up of Utopia Ensemble for the first time: Michaela Riener (mezzo), Bart Uvyn (countertenor), Adriaan De Koster (tenor), Lieven Termont (baritone) and Guillaume Olry (bass). Their latest album "Salve Susato", presented in autumn 2023, was honoured with a Diapason d’Or. Utopia Ensemble took its name from the book by Thomas More, who started writing this work in Antwerp in 1515. Inspired by the interesting and innovative ideas in the book, Utopia also wants to play a social role. As 'ensemble in residence' in the beautiful Antwerp Church of Saint-Paul’s, Utopia has a wonderful home base for concerts and new projects. Utopia specialises in vocal music from the 16th century, always looking for a profound expressiveness. The starting point of polyphonic singing, where all voices are equally important, fits Utopia like a glove and results in a rich and homogeneous sound.
