Brooklyn-based musician Maŕa is an experimental artist and the founder of Cultivated Sound, exploring the sounds between dark ambient, experimental music, IDM and techno. Her genre-spanning repertoire is undoubtedly best sampled in 2024’s debut album Dawn, a six-tracker that visits feelings of discovery, madness, romance, darkness and power. Landing via her label and agency Cultivated Sound, launching as a reboot for the label, Cultivated Sound artists include Ariel Zetina, Anna Wall, Phon.o, Maria Chávez, Hiroko Yamamura, Frankie Bones, Phil Moffa and Rosa Anschutz. Maŕa is multifaceted. As a DJ, she’s a regular at The Lot Radio and has played at some of the city’s most notable haunts including Elsewhere, Le Bain, Bossa Nova Civic Club, H0L0, Market Hotel, and Output. Beyond self-releasing her work, her interrogations of calm and chaos can also be found on Nocturnal Frequencies, Always Human Tapes and most notably, Air Texture, with her stirring track ‘Rebellion’ landing on its charged compilation series alongside Silent Servant, Rrose, Octa Octa, Laurel Halo and Luke Slater. A year on, she’d re-release the record on a V/A EP with remixes by LDY OSC and S. English. In the afterglow of Dawn, she’s lining up a collaborative album with Italian producer Mystics, one which emerges from a serene mixture of emotional decay and nuanced feelings to explore concepts of personal transmission and impermanence.
