Techno, house, and bass music, among many other strains of underground dance music, are all fair game for Harry Agius, the DJ and producer who goes by Midland. Despite an evolving set of interests, none of the London-based artist's output -- all created with the intent to provoke an involuntary physical response -- has sounded like the result of mere dabbling. Agius' renown as both a DJ and producer truly coalesced in 2016. His wriggling and aching sample-based disco-funk single "Final Credits" was ubiquitous during that year's summer festival season, and his BBC Essential Mix, broadcast in February, was awarded Essential Mix of the Year. Fabriclive 94, Agius' subsequent commercial mix, strengthened his reputation in 2017. He has focused more on DJing since then, though he has added Dua Lipa to his list of remix clients, and has also expanded the catalog of his long-running Graded label with varied EPs such as The Alchemy of Circumstance (2022) and You Never Take Me Dancing (2023). Raised in Tanzania and Greece, Agius attended university in Leeds, England, where he began as a drum'n'bass and dubstep DJ and recorded shows for Frequency FM. As Midland, he made his production debut in 2010, the year he and close associate Ramadanman teamed up for a collaborative 12" release on Aus Music and released the solo Play the Game through Phonica. Into the latter half of the 2010s, Agius issued singles and EPs at a rate of roughly three a year for Aus and his own labels, Graded and its Regraded subsidiary. Additionally, he put together mixes for Fact magazine, Resident Advisor, and Dekmantel, and remixed tracks by Lone, Julio Bashmore, and Flume. Following his 2016 successes with his BBC Essential Mix and widely embraced "Final Credits," he put together his first official mix CD, Fabriclive 94, released in 2017. Featured on the cover of Mixmag's February 2019 issue, he followed up with the streaming/digital set Mixmag Presents Midland, and also released The Alchemy of Circumstance, a four-track EP, before the end of the year. As Agius' DJ talent remained in high demand across the globe, he devoted less time to studio work in the 2020s. He fielded remix commissions from Dua Lipa ("Pretty Please") and Tom VR ("Soared Straight Through Me"), and in 2023 teamed with vocalist Fiorious for the electro/freestyle-inspired single "Handle It," and also released another four-track EP, You Never Take Me Dancing. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
