Hip-hop was never just about music. It’s cultural tsunami that started atop the cracked pavement of the South Bronx in the early ’80s -- and has since crashed over every shore in the world. Hip-hop is a culture, a rhythmic heartbeat to life in the 21st century, a way of seeing the world. It’s a language, whose grammar is lifted (or sampled) from funk, jazz, disco and every other music in history. Today, there are kids growing up in Mongolia and Tierra del Fuego trying to discern the meanings buried in the lyrics of Wu-Tang Clan, Tupac and Kendrick Lamar. But like learning any language, you’ve got to start with the basics, the elements: loops of sound on a tape, rhythmic fragments, lyrics scrawled on a notepad. The K.R.U.N.K. Movement is a student-led initiative from Center of Life in Pittsburgh aimed at promoting positive mental and physical health through the five elements of hip hop. This community provides students with the opportunity to cultivate their creative skills through many forms of artistic expression, including writing, recording, and producing music, as well as creating visual art and choreography. This is their music.
