Biography

Born in 1930, Arkansas saxophonist Monk Higgins taught music in Chicago while moonlighting as a musician. He worked with legendary artists like Etta James and Koko Taylor, producing and arranging numerous recordings. His own music, released on labels like Sack Records, showcases his versatility from funky vocals to jazzy instrumentals. Higgins' career began in the 1960s, when he worked for One-Derful! Records. He later collaborated with various labels, including Chess, Blue Note, MCA, Dunhill, and Buddha. His work also extended to film, scoring the classic Pam Greier film "Sheba, Baby." Beyond his commercial success, Higgins' personal label, Sack Records, features a collection of singles showcasing his talent and versatility. While less known, these recordings are highly regarded by soul and jazz enthusiasts.
