b. Millicent Mary Lillian Martin, 8 June 1934, Romford, Essex, England. Intent on a stage career, Martin started out as a child actor. When she was in her early twenties she established herself through playing in both the West End and Broadway productions of The Boy Friend (1954). This began a long period of minor roles on the stage and in films and television. Among her London stage appearances were Expresso Bongo (1958) and The Crooked Mile (1959), while her films in this period included Libel (1959) and the television film The Horsemasters (1961). On television, Martin appeared on The Morecambe And Wise Show in 1961, and became popular with late-night audiences owing to her singing and acting appearances on the successful That Was The Week That Was (1962-63). She continued to work in television in the UK, including ABC Of Britain, Mainly Millicent (both 1964) and a one-hour special, in which she co-starred with Roy Castle, Millicent And Roy (1966). Martin also appeared in the movies Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines (1965) and Alfie (1966), and was in the film version of Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse’s Stop The World - I Want To Get Off (1966). On stage, she played opposite Jim Dale in The Card (1975), and co-starred with Julia McKenzie and David Kiernan in London’s West End in the revue, Side By Side By Sondheim (1976), subsequently appearing in the New York production. Dividing her stage career between musical and non-musical performances, she appeared as Dorothy Brock in the New York production of 42nd Street and as Phyllis in the West End production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies (1987). She was also in Hey, Mr. Producer! The Musical World Of Cameron Mackintosh (1998). From the late 80s and into the early 00s, Martin has been a regular presence in television series and situation comedies on both sides of the Atlantic, including Downtown (1986), Moon And Son (1992), Days Of Our Lives (late 90s), a recurring role as Carol in That’s Life (2000), and the long-running hit situation comedy, Frasier, in which she appeared in another recurring role, as Gertrude Moon, from 2000-03. She also appeared in the movie Mrs. Palfrey At The Claremont (2005).
