Biography

On the cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Presence” album, a creepy family is staring at a mysterious black object. Fol Chen sounds like that object. We also sound like Prince getting tangled up in Amon Duul II at a children's spiritual revival that’s gone a bit off the rails. We are cryptic and joyful and we would like you to dance. Our three albums of fractured electronic pop have earned praise from Pitchfork, the New York Times, and NPR, as well as from the godfather of experimental pop, David Byrne. We have remixed David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens (who owns our label, Asthmatic Kitty), and legendary club producer Junior Vasquez. We have been remixed by friends like Liars and Baths. We covered Prince for SPIN Magazine’s “Purplish Rain” tribute, and teamed with Monome on a limited-edition sound toy called a Tetrafol. We’ve performed live on four continents and on-air at KCRW, KEXP, the BBC, and Dublab. We have presented projects at LACMA, the Walker Art Center, and the Annenberg Space for Photography. Fol Chen hasn’t really been a band since 2013, but in 2020 we started releasing odds and ends from our archives. We have been Samuel Bing, Garrett Henritz, Sinosa Loa, Alex Myrvold, Patrik-Ian Polk, Melissa Thorne, Jeph Valenzuela, and Julian Wass.
