Esteban Farinango AKA Mala Fama is an Ecuadorian music producer based in Ibarra – Ecuador. Mala Fama’s experimental productions translate the specificity of geographies and communities within Ecuador, while also celebrating his self- directed intersections with experimental electronic futurism. His latest EP ‘Anta’, released on Apocalispis (New York), centers on experimental ambient, non-linear retellings of what he describes as “everyday people telling everyday stories” in his Kichwa community. Mala Fama is a testament to the power of inhabiting multiple worlds at once while being rooted in indigenous pride and power. His productions reflect the diversity of his province Imbabura, layering deconstructed soundscapes, the region’s indigenous music, traditions of the Valle del Chota’s Afro-Ecuadorian communities, and a dialogue with dance music. Mala Fama is currently working on a new full length album, to be released fall 2022. As a self-made bridge between traditional Latin American underground movements and pioneers, Mala Fama has recently shared the stage with Nicola Cruz, Pancho Piedra, Quixosis, Fidel Eljuri, Siete Catorce, Riobamba, and Charijayac. He’s been featured on The Lot Radio and Red Bull Radio, in important press mediums such as Remezcla, Resident Advisor, and The Fader, and even documentaries by ZZK Records and Native Instruments.
