Biography

New Orleans native Slangston Hughes is a Hip-Hop artist whose work as an MC, musician, and bandleader makes him one of the most dynamic talents emerging from the city, and one whose live performances rival many of his contemporaries. Having been called a representative of unheard, progressive New Orleans Rap, Slangston became the first artist to win the Microphone Co-Rivalry MC Competition three times, and his energetic, live instrumentation Hip-Hop stage show has been featured by Revolt TV’s Local Love Tour and Hard Rock Cafe’s Rock Local/Win Global contest. Celebrated for both his solo endeavors and work as a member of Superugly and Tygah Woods, who won Group of the Year at the 2011 New Orleans Music Awards. In the years since, he's cultivated his live show further, drawing influence from Black Milk’s Nat Turner band, The Roots, and Oddisee & Good Company to merge lyrical Hip-Hop with New Orleans' Jazz-influenced musicianship. Having opened for acclaimed acts like Big Freedia, Freddie Gibbs, Black Milk, Oddisee, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Akil (Jurassic 5), Rapper Big Pooh, Mickey Factz, etc. Slangston has also extended his reach beyond the stage, founding the monthly talent showcase Uniquity, which features local and national talent and incorporates Fo On The Flo. He is lso a contributing author to the 2010 guidebook New Orleans: The Underground Guide, now in its third printing.
