Alejandro Albarrán (1985) is a Mexican poet, songwriter and artist whose work is characterized by his experimental approach, it integrates performance, installation and artist's books. He is the author of the books Ruido (Bonobos, 2012), Tengo un pulmón que no es el cielo (FETA, 2015) and Persona fea y ridícula (FETA, 2017). His 2018 poetry collection Algunas personas no son caballos won the Premio Internacional Manuel Acuña. He has received grants from the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, the Fundación para las Letras Mexicanas and the Instituto Veracruzano de Cultura. He has participated in collective exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as in various art and literature festivals such as Poesía en voz alta, Mexico; Lit & Luz Festival, USA; Poesifestivalen Bagdad Café, Sweden; Festival Artes Vertentes, Brazil; Latinale, Germany. His poems have been translated into English, French, Portuguese, Danish, German, Polish and Swedish, and will be part of the Best American Experimental Writing 2020 anthology. La Tempestad magazine chose him as an emerging writer in 2017. In songwriting he explores different popular Latin American folk genres with the intention of re-interpreting them in “current” melodies and lyrics. His sound passes through the bossa nova, the ranchera song, the bolero or the cumbia, his songs have a strong influence from composers such as Leonard Cohen, Georges Brassens, Boris Vian, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé or Violeta Parra.
