Biography

Though Ferdinand Schubert could be remembered simply as Franz's brother, this would certainly not do him justice. He received musical lessons from his father and also studied at the Normalhauptschule in Vienna, 1807-08. Later, 1824, he became the headmaster and in 1851 he became the director of the same school. His teaching and organizational skills were impeccable but he also used these skills to borrow music from his brother. The most noted case was the "Deutsches Requiem" which he used to obtain employment as an organist and choirmaster. Ferdinand was also known to have appropriated some of Franz's shorter, earlier works for music primers. Fortunately, he also used his talents to obtain publications for some of his brother's more extensive works. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
